Euclid Proposition 1

Goal / Objective:

In this Grade 8 mathematics seminar, students will  learn the principles of Euclidean Geometry, and explore the connection of these concepts to digital fabrication technologies such as 3-D printing and laser-cutting. They will then apply these geometry-based technologies to the design and fabrication of a model of a  modern architectural building or interactive sculpture.

In the process of doing this, they will become familiar with digital fabrication technologies based upon geometric concepts,  including InkScape vector graphics, SketchUp and/or Solidworks CAD software, Rapman 3-D printing, and lasercutting, and apply these technologies to the construction of their model. The MIT Department of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence (CSAIL) has generously donated a 3D printer to the Middle School which will be utilized in this course.

This course will be taught using a blended-learning model. Most of the formal lectures and discussion will take place online, in conjunction with  The Art of Problem Solving (http://www.artofproblemsolving.com/) online Geometry course, Sept 24th 2012-  March 5th 2013.

This is an advanced course for a small cohort of students who completed Grade 8 Advanced Algebra while in Grade 7.

Available facilities include both Mac and PC computer labs, woodshop, 3D Printer, and access(off-site) to a lasercutter through the Artisan's Asylum.
